AUGUSTINE || || || || PRESIDENT, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA (1994- ) || || || =========================================================== Norman R. Augustine does nothing halfway, whether he is lecturing at the Smithsonian Institution, dogsledding in the Arctic, or serving the Boy Scouts of America as President. He started in scouting as an 8 year old Cub Scout and, prior to his election as President, served the BSA as Executive Vice President. He was elected President at the BSA's Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennes- see, in May, 1994, where he also received the Silver Buffalo Award. An aeronautical engineering graduate of Princeton University, Mr. Augustine is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Martin Marietta Corporation. Previously he was with the Douglas Aircraft Company and the LTV Missiles and Space Company. He served in the Pentagon as an assistant director of defense research and engineering and later returned to gov- ernment as Assistant Secretary, then Undersecretary, of the Army. Mr. Augustine has actively supported organizations as diverse as the American Red Cross and the Defense Science Board. He has chaired the NASA/White House Committee on the U.S. Space Program, the NASA Space Systems and Technology Advisory Committee, and the President's National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee. The United States Senate; the Departments of Defense, Army, Navy, Air Force, Energy, and Transporta- tion; and NATO also have sought his counsel. Four times he has been awarded the Department of Defense's highest civilian decoration, the Distinguished Service Medal. Mr. Augustine is an author, a photographer, and an accomplished outdoorsman who has explored volcanoes in the Antarctic, backpacked in the Canadian Rockies, and snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef. ...
