You should have asked me earlier, Paris! Here's your list along with the additions you asked for (this is NOT inclusive; just the ones that I subscribe, upload or make postings/comments to or through): > * rec.scouting INTERNET newsgroup > * SCOUTS-L BITNET mailing list (I added the comments because there are differences between the two; postings to Scouts-L are MAILED to each Scouter daily; postings to Rec.Scouting MUST BE READ using a newsreader program and a connection to the Internet) * America Online (must be AOL member); AOL carries Rec.Scouting as part of it's USENET newsgroups as well as carries a separate area for Scouting news, information and comments (Keyword SCOUTING or SCOUTS). The "syops" are Pat Skelly and Genevena ? (I forgot her last name presently..) Scouts-L archives and clipart files are also kept there. > * CompuServe's Scouting forum (must be Compuserve member); CompuServe carries a separate area for Scouting news, information and comments (Keyword OUTDOORS) along with other outdoor information. I don't know who the "sysops" area. Some of Scouts-L's archives and clipart files are also kept in the general file area. * GEnie (must be a GEnie user); same deal as CompuServe except that GEnie also has a weekly online chat similiar to what is found on America Online. I believe the door number is 255 to get into the forum area. * FIDONET Scouting and Scouter Echos; these are conversations which are carried over a network of local bulletin boards (BBS) nationwide. There are two "echoes", one which concrentrate on issues and the other more of a friendship exchange. * Cleveland Freenet's Scouting section; which carries "extracts" of Scouting discussions from all of the above as well as its own. More importantly, it has become the "repository" for online versions of BSA publications, regulations and forms. It is sharply executed by Paul Wolf, a veteran Scouter from the Cleveland area. *LISTSERV@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU is a MAIL ONLY request site which is connected to Scouts-L. It has the largest collection of clipart presently, in addition to archived monthly logs of Scouts-l and the famous Eagletips, Games and Skits collections. It also has lots of other files compiled by members of Scouts-l covering topics such as the "square knots", religious emblems for youth and adults and helpful tips for Commissioners. Your files are sent to you either as mail files or as text files. The files are maintained by Jon Eidson, a longtime Texas Scouter and the listowner of Scouts-L. The listserver takes some time to learn...you can start by asking for the HELP file from the listserver. * PLUTO.UDALLAS.EDU is the "national Scouting FTP (file transfer protocol) site". FTP allows you to get files faster than having them mailed to your site or using an external protocol like Kermit or Zmodem to obtain the files. Presently, there are "copies" of the popular items found at Cleveland, Scouts-L and FIDONET; however it is filling fast (and that's a GREAT thing!) To access, your system must support FTP, and you log-in to PLUTO by using FTP as the userid. Your password is your email address. (this is called "anonoymous FTP"). There's a limit on the number of folks that can access this site at any one given time. (Steve ?) Webb is the site manager of the "official Scouting FTP site". (*) There's also a FTP site that is being maintained by Danny of this list in Switzerland. Danny's site (which I don't have the net address....help, Danny!!!!) is VERY LIMITED in space and only carries Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) of this newsgroup and presently eleven FAQs covering various aspects of the Scouting program, especially worldwide Scouting programs. [Note: ftp.ethz.ch is not limited at all, I've simply decided to emphasize on textual scouting hints and tips rather than on clip-art and binaries, which doesn't have that usefulness vs. size ratio -- Danny] (*) There are about 30 or so BBSs which carry Scouting discussions throughout the nation. While these are NOT "national lists", the conversations and topics they discuss makes their way eventually to the other lists and forums. I don't have a updated version, and Steve Sousa (S2) and Ray Dyke among others were working on updating the listing in time for the INTERNET Lodge meeting. When we all get back, I think that we can share and upload that list here as well. (*) I was told that Ray Dyke's BBS (called ON MY HONOR) and Steve Sousa's BBS (I'm not sure what S2's BBS is called) also maintains quite a bit of files which are also found on the other sites. This is really convienent for those that don't have direct INTERNET access but want to spend the long distance call (Ray is in Tennessee; Steve is in California) to get the files or clipart they need. (*) sometime after the first of the year, there will be a new site set up through Blackeagle Services, called Leaders Online, which will also have those files and more in GEOS format (Geos is a operating system which works similiarly to Microsoft Windows, but which runs on the oldest machines as quickly and easily as the latest Pentitum. Many of the files will be available in text, WordPerfect, and Geowrite versions; the clipart will be available in *.PCX or WPG versions only. Leaders Online will be available through a tollfree 800 number for a flat fee a year. This will enable those that do not have net access at all to "catch up" on what is going on in those other discussion lists, as well as to get the files that they need. Blackeagle Services is in Kentucky.
