Gary Hendra, WDL, Pack 92, Milpitas \par }\pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar {\b\ul \par }The {\b Information Superhighway } is here! And there are a lot of Scouting related things out there in Cyberspace. In the Spring of 1994 there were a couple discussion groups, two or three FTP (File Transfer Protocol) sites, one USENET newsgroup and no World Wide Web pages related to sc outing. Today there are many discussion groups, many ftp sites, many bulletin boards, and countless Web pages -- the number of Scouting Web pages produced by Troops, Posts and Councils is growing exponentially. \par If you can get a computer onto Internet, either through an ISP (Internet Service Provider) or one of the major services -- AOL, Compuserve, e-World, Prodigy, etc -- you should be able to access everything you read about in this paper. \par This is an introduction to what is out there. It is not intended to provide any information on how to use specific applications -- you will have to work that out for yourself. In particular, if you are having trouble getting onto Internet from AOL, Compuserve, Prodigy, etc, you will have to take that up with your provider. One more thing: I am a Macintosh person, so the PC information here may be somewhat sketchy. If you can give me better information, I'll gladly accept it for the next revision. If you need some Macintosh specific information, contact me at hendra@macscouter.com or hendra@bes t.com. \par My sincere thanks to a whole bunch of people who contributed to this -- in particular, Danny Schwendener , Alan Houser , Andrew Heath , David A. Crow , Michael S. Holmes , Rob Harper , David Jansen , Russel Madere , Daniel Kropveld, Amsterdam-NL . My apology if I hav e plagiarized something without permission. \par {\b\ul \par }\pard \qj\widctlpar {\b 1.0\tab The Basics \par }\pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar There are a variety of free and shareware applications available to support both Macintosh and Wintel platforms. Some of them are listed below. To obtain these, you will usually need to use an ftp client of some sort. Anonymous ftp is performed by usin g the word anonymous as the username and your e-mail address as the password, when logging onto an ftp server. You can also perform ftp using a World Wide Web browser, such as Netscape or Mosaic. \par {\b\ul \par }\pard \qj\widctlpar {\b 1.1\tab Macintosh Basics \par }\pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar For those of you who are using a Macintosh, there are several free or shareware applications that will make life easier, if your ISP supports them. \par \par {\b FTP and Archie Clients: \par }There are two FTP clients, Fetch and Anarchie. I am partial to Fetch. The original is available at: dartvax.dartmouth.edu//pub/Mac/Fetch_2.1.2.sit.hqx. \par Anarchie is an FTP and Archie client. It will let you browse FTP sites, download files, or find them using an Archie server. It is (in Peter Lewis's humble o pinion) the easiest way for users with MacTCP to fetch a file with a partially known name or to browse around the anonymous FTP archives. It includes a menu listing all the Archie servers, as well as FTP bookmarks for all the popular Macintosh FTP sites (including around 40 mirrors to UMich and Info-Mac). It requires System 7 and MacTCP 1.1 or later. Unfortunately many Archie servers are a bit on the flaky side, but don\rquote t worry, just try another server! The Anarchie FTP client original is available at ftp://amug.org//mnt/ftp4/peterlewis/anarchie-140.sit.bin . \par \par {\b Newsreader Clients: \par }InterNews, a sophisticated USENET newsgroup reader is available at: ftp://dartvax.dartmouth.edu//pub/Mac/InterNews_1.0.1.sea.hqx \par A somewhat less sophisticated, but very usable newsgroup reader called NewsWatcher is available at: ftp.acns.nwu.edu//pub/newswatcher . \par \par {\b Web Browsers:} \par The hot one in Cyberspace right now is Netscape from Netscape Communications. This World Wide Web browser is superb -- fast, versatile and it looks nice. It can be obtained via anonymous ftp at: \par \pard \qj\widctlpar ftp.netscape.com//netscape/Mac . \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar The Mosaic World Wide Web (WWW) browser is available at: ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu//Web/Mosaic/Mac . \par {\b Gopher Clients: \par }TurboGopher is the application of choice. It is available via anonymous ftp at ftp://boombox.micro.umn.edu//pub/gopher/Macintosh-TurboGopher \par If you need help in using or getting started with gopher, send e-mail to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu, with, send usenet/news.answers/gopher-faq, in the message body. \par \par {\b Terminal Emulator:} \par The Telnet terminal emulator and ftp client is available at: ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu//Mac/Telnet/Telnet2.6 \par \par {\b Electronic Mail Clients: \par } Eudora is a very nice offline mail client. It requires a POP mail server running on a UNIX computer. Eudora automatically logs onto the host, at predetermined intervals, and copies all pending mail to your computer. Eudora comes in two flavors, a freew are version, and a commercial version ($50/copy), from Qualcomm. If you are interested in the commercial version, which does provide many enhanced functions, either contact Qualcomm or check out your favorite computer software catalog. The freeware version of Eudora may be obtained via anonymous ftp at: ftp://ftp.qualcomm.com//quest/mac/eudora \par A Mac version of POPMail is available via anonymous ftp at: \par \pard \qj\widctlpar ftp://boombox.micro.umn.edu//pub/POPmail/macintosh . \par \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar {\b Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Clients: \par } So far, I have come across two IRC Clients. ircle and Homer. ircle was written by Olaf Titz (s_titz@ira.uka.de), and modified by Onno R. Tijdgat (tijdgat@knoware.nl). ircle is free, can be found many places, including ftp://ftp.undernet.org/undernet/cl ients/macintosh/ircle . This is a small very simple application. \par Homer is a slick and sophistocated application, and can be found at ftp://ftp.undernet.org/undernet/clients/macintosh/homer . \par \par {\b Compression and Decompression Applications:} \par Aladdin Systems ha s two superb applications available to help with StuffIt archives and binhex encoding. They are the freeware application Stuffit Expander, and the shareware application DropStuff. Aladdin Systems Stuffit applications can be found at: ftp://ftp.netcom.com //pub/leonardr/Aladdin . \par Compact Pro archives (.cpt) are probably the second most common type you will encounter. Compact Pro applications can be found at any Info-Mac archive site, such as: \par \pard \qj\li720\widctlpar ftp://grind.isca.uiowa.edu//3/mac/infomac/cmp/compact-pro-151.sit \par ftp://grind.isca.uiowa.edu//3/mac/infomac/cmp/cpt-expand-10.sea \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar If you find PC files in .zip archive format, you can unzip them using the Unzip utility, which can also be found at: \par \pard \qj\li720\widctlpar ftp://grind.isca.uiowa.edu//3/mac/infomac/cmp/unzip-201.cpt \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar \par {\b Encoding and Decoding Applications: \par }Many encoding and decoding functions are built into Mac applications. As an example, AppleSingle, AppleDouble and Binhex are built into Eudora. Fetch has BinHex, AppleSingle, and MacBinary II built in. \par The BinHex 4.0, and BinHex 5.0 applications are available via anonymous ftp at any Info-Mac archive site, such as: \par \pard \qj\li720\widctlpar ftp://grind.isca.uiowa.edu//3/mac/infomac/cmp/binhex-40.sit \par ftp://grind.isca.uiowa.edu//3/mac/infomac/cmp/binhex-50.sea \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar When you run across uuencoded files, you can uudecode them using either of the following utilities: \par \pard \qj\li720\widctlpar ftp://grind.isca.uiowa.edu//3/mac/infomac/cmp/uu-undo-10.sit \par ftp://grind.isca.uiowa.edu//3/mac/infomac/cmp/uutool-232.bin \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar \par \pard \qj\widctlpar {\b 1.2\tab PC Basics} \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar Most PC programs can be obtained at any of the major Internet archives, including but not limited to wuarchive.wustl.edu (fsp, gopher), ftp.cica.indiana.edu (ftp, fsp, gopher), oak.oakland.edu (ftp) and their mirror sites. \par \par \pard \qj\fi360\keepn\widctlpar {\b FTP and Archie Clients: \par }One ftp client is WS_FTP. It is reportedly a very user friendly FTP program (point and click). I haven't yet run across an Archie client. If anyone out there knows of good FTP and Archie clients available on Internet, let me know. \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar \par {\b Newsreader Clients: \par }The easiest to use newsreader is Wintrumpet by Peter Tattam peter@psychnet.psychol.utas.edu.au. This shareware program is a bargain at $40 and evaluation copies may be obtained at all major archive sites. \par There is also a public domain newsreader called WinVN which is available at most archive sites that is quite capable, but not as easy to use as Wintrumpet. \par \par {\b Web Browsers:} \par The hot one in Cyberspace right now is Netscape from Netscape Communications. This World Wide Web browser is superb -- fast, versatile and it looks nice. It can be found at: ftp.netscape.com//netscape/Windows . \par The Mosaic World Wide Web (WWW) browser is available at: ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu//Web/Mosaic/Windows \par \par {\b Gopher Clients: \par }TurboGopher is the application of choice. The DOS version is available via anonymous ftp at boombox.micro.umn.edu//pub/gopher/PC_client, and the Windows version is available at: boombox.micro.umn.edu//pub/gopher/Windows \par If you need help in using or getting started with gopher, send e-mail to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu, with, send usenet/news.answers/gopher-faq, in the message body. \par \par {\b Terminal Emulator:} \par The Telnet terminal emulator and ftp client is available at: \par \pard \qj\widctlpar ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu//Telnet/DOS . \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar \par {\b Electronic Mail Clients: \par } Eudora is a very nice offline mail client. There is a US mirror site at (expires in October) ftp://ftp.alumni.caltech.edu/pub/dank/internet-kit/internet.exe. There is a Canadian Mirror at ftp://gwrp.cciw.ca/pub/internet . \par The software in this kit includes the following: \par Trumpet winsock - shareware TCP-IP software (one of the best!) \par WINQVT - mainly telnet (but has other services - i.e., POP mail, NEWS, FTP) (you can print telnet screens to printer with ALT F2) \par NCSA Mosaic WWW client - old 16 bit version with picture viewer pre-installed. (easy to load). A new fast 32 bit version is available but requires Win32s to be installed prior to use for Win 3.1 and 3.11. \par HGOPHER - gopher client software \par WINTRUMPET - presently the best user-friendly Usenet newsreader around (Also has decent POP Mail) (my opinion only). \par WS_FTP - Very user friendly FTP program (point and click). \par TRMPTEL - Simple no-frills VT100 telnet program. \par Read the install.txt file for details on system requirements and how to install the software. \par \par {\b Compression and Decompression Applications:} \par An MS DOS version of a BinHex application is available at ftp://boombox.micro.umn.edu//pub/binhex .{\ul \par }PKZip is the archiver of choice, and version 2.04g is the latest. It is free for personal use and is available at almost any ftp site as pkz204g.exe. Registration gets you the added multiple disk compression and auto validation functions. \par You should also get the latest shareware copies of arj and lha to handle those occasional files using these methods compression. A few die-hards are using .arj and .lha(.lzh is the same thing). These methods are sometimes used for distribution, usually as self extracting archives. \par \par {\b Encoding and Decoding Applications: \par }For DOS, the best choice is UDEC.EXE (udec1_0.zip) by Peter Liebel (liebel@cip.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de). This universal decoding program handles UUENCODE, XXENCODE, MPACK(MIME), SHIP and HEXBIN files. \par For Windows, the decoder of choice is WINCODE (wmcode26.zip) by George.Silva@wadsworth.org which handles UUENCODE, XXENCODE, MPACK(MIME), and HEXBIN. \par Both programs are FREEWARE and are available at most archive sites. \par {\ul \par }\pard \qj\widctlpar {\b 1.3\tab Notes about File Transfers}{\b\ul \par }\pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar Some of the files you will encounter on ftp sites are stored in some binary data encoding and/or compressed format. Such files usually have a special suffix, as described below, to identify the type of encoding and compression. That is not always the case. Some applications, such as Fetch, will automatically detect most encodings and compressions and perform the proper opposite function. \par Why are files encoded? Because many computer applications, mail systems, and communication channels operate on 7-bit data . Encoding is done on 8-bit data files to pass them through 7-bit systems. Where do 8-bit data files come from? From many of the applications on your computer, such as MS Word, etc. \par Why are files compressed? Simply, to take up less room on a host computer. A text or application file may be able to be compressed down to 60 or 70% of its original size. A clipart file can often be compressed to 30 or 40% of its original size. This i s why you will find virtually all PC and Mac clipart files grouped together into folders (directories), and either compressed using PKZip on PC or StuffIt on Mac. \par Remember to set your FTP transfer type to binary before downloading compressed files. Otherwise, you won't be able to uncompress them on your local machine. To SUBSCRIBE to the SCOUTS-L list you send your name and e-mail address to the list-server. Doing so will allow you to receive all postings to the SCOUTS-L list as well as allowing you to post messages to SCOUTS-L. To subsc ribe you should send a 1 line e-mail message to listserv@tcubvm.is.tcu.edu without any extra headings or signature lines. This message should be as follows: \par SUBSCRIBE SCOUTS-L Your-First-Name Your-Last-Name \par After you subscribe, you will receive more inform ation about the server via E-mail. To send mail to all SCOUTS-L members address your message to SCOUTS-L@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU. The list server software can respond to various commands but be sure to send them to LISTSERV@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU, and not to the s ubscribers of SCOUTS-L! \par The list server manages one of the largest archives of scouting related texts, clip-art, FAQ's, Hypercard stacks, etc. It also contains notebooks of all previous postings to SCOUTS-L. To get a list of these items, send the followi ng in the body of a message to LISTSERV@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU: index Scouts-L . Look for Macintosh related clipart in the group titled MACPICTS, and PC related clipart in the group titled SCOUTPCX. \par To learn more about Scouts-L, send an e-mail message to listserv@tcubvm.is.tcu.edu with the single line, GET SCOUTS-L WELCOME. \par \par \pard \qj\keepn\widctlpar {\b 2.2\tab The E-Scouts Discussion List \par }\pard \qj\fi360\keepn\widctlpar The E-Scouts Discussion list is also hosted by tcubvm.is.tcu.edu. Use a USENET client to access the group. \par Rec.scouting has a wider audience than any mailing list (current estimates are around 20'000 readers worldwide) but the negative side of this is that it has a higher amount of 'noise' (i.e. contributions with little or no useful content) than in a mailing list. To cope with this fact, the most useful contributions are collected by a group of editors and c ompiled in a group of FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions files) which is archived on a number of sites and posted on rec.scouting every month. Other items that did not make it into a FAQ file (because of their kind or size) are stored on the different FTP a rchives. \par One of the places where you can pick up the FAQ files is on the scouting archives at ftp.ethz.ch/rec.scouting/faq: \par rec.scouting FAQ #0: Welcome to rec.scouting - General questions \par rec.scouting FAQ #1: Skits Yells And Campfires \par rec.scouting FAQ #2: Scouting around the World \par rec.scouting FAQ #3 Games \par rec.scouting FAQ #4: Unit Administration \par rec.scouting FAQ #5: Silk Screen Techniques \par rec.scouting FAQ #6: Cub Scout Leader Hints \par rec.scouting FAQ #7: Fund Raising Ideas \par rec.scouting FAQ #8: BSA/GSUSA official policies (gays in scouting) \par rec.scouting FAQ #9: Scouting on the World Wide Web \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar The easiest way to obtain these FAQs is to use a WWW Browser, such as Netscape, Mosaic or something similar, to access them at the URL http://www.cis.ohio-state. edu/hypertext/faq/usenet/scouting/top.html . It allows users to talk to other users all around the world via the Internet. This is done by connecting a client program to a server. You need a connection to any network connected to the Internet and running TCP/IP. You have to select your preferred server (usually the nearest), as listed below. The port number used by IRC servers is usually 6667. \par On IRC, users are identified by nicknames of their own choice. Nicknames may be at most 9 characters long. The nickname is set via preferences or the NICK command in your IRC client. If you choose a nickname already in use, you have to set a different n ickname. Some users have registered their nicknames with the NickServ database. If you get a message from NickServ that your nickname is in use, you will have to choose another. \par Communication on IRC is done via Channels and Private Messages. Channels have names starting with # (public channels) and & (local) and usually up to 12 characters long. You can see a list of the channels currently in use via the /LIST command issued to y our IRC client. As soon as you join a channel with the /JOIN command, everything you type is sent to that channel and seen by all other users on that channel. You will see what the others type, respectively. \par There are over 2000 IRC channels. Of interest to us is the #scouting channel. You can join the discussion by issuing a "/join #scouting" command to your IRC client. \par There are a lot of IRC servers all over the world -- hundreds. Below you will find a very few listed. You may copy and print these files for your own use, but please don't forward them to other people and don't make them available on other sites, BBSs or networks. These are raw prerelease's with no version information and we try t o avoid any version confusion. \par art -- The rec.scouting archives at ftp.ethz.ch are not the place to send scouting-related clip-art files (our site policy does not allow clip-art archives on this machine). The following is the standard description that we post in response to inquires we receive on the Internet. \par ScoutWare 1.0 for Windows is a comprehensive shareware program for tracking scout troop information. Includes personal info for scouts and Scouters, point and click advancement and merit badge tracking, leadership history, and several reports. Unlimited number of records allowed in all database tables (up to maximum 2 gigabytes for entire database). Requires IBM compatible 386 or better, 8 MBytes RAM, 5 MBytes space on hard drive. \par ScoutWare 1.0 is available for download via anonymous FTP from ftp.us.net. The directory is /pub/sco ut and the file name is scoutw.exe. This is a self-extracting executable (2.7 megabytes, so make sure you have a fast modem) containing the ScoutWare setup files. The size is 240,615 bytes. \par Introducing Scoutmate v3.12 -- the last scouting software you'll ever need! \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar Scoutmate is what you've been waiting for in comprehensiveness, user friendliness and complete user upgradability. It is also the least expensive of the major scouting software packages. \par \pard \qj\fi360\keepn\widctlpar Look at all Scoutmate offers: \par \pard \qj\fi-360\li720\keepn\widctlpar *\tab 8 page s of information on each scout (including personal and parent info, merit badges, other awards, positions held (incl. history), ranks (and requirements completed), up to 52 weeks of dues paid (attendance), medical info, camping, etc.) \par \pard \qj\fi-360\li720\widctlpar *\tab Adult leader tracking which tracks personal and business information, awards, positions, training and group/committees. \par *\tab Global Update allows you to "batch" update the database (merit badges and dues). \par *\tab Merit badge Counselor Module which tracks information on merit badge counselors including merit badges they counsel, days and times available. You can also query the database for counselors available for certain badges between certain times. \par *\tab Troop Inventory and Merit Badge Book Library modules which track the inventory of the troop, if it's lent out and to whom, etc. \par *\tab Financial Module tracks up to 5 accounts that the troop may have. \par *\tab Several reports are available including Advancement Progress Reports, Roster, Phone List, and more. Scoutmate also allows you to "PAINT" r eports which means that you can CUSTOMIZE your own reports. So now the combinations are limitless. Samples are included (including a General Worksheet Form). Individual Progress reports (suitable for sending to district offices) are available also. \par *\tab Permission Slips can also be printed. \par *\tab Mail Merge allows you to type the letter once and send it to all or select adults and/or scouts. \par *\tab You can form projects/groups/committees in Scoutmate. You can then assign adults and scouts to these groups, and then send mail merges (or reports, etc.) only to people assigned to these groups. \par *\tab You have complete control over defaults. You can easily modify patrol names, group/committee names/codes, colors, troop and adult positions, return addresses and default City/State/Zip Code/Area Codes. \par *\tab You can add or delete merit badges effortlessly. Do other programs allow this? Merit badges are in official BSA order, but can be printed out within Scoutmate in either official BSA number OR alphabetical order. \par *\tab Ability to query the database for things such as scout's that have (or don't have) merit badges, rank, in certain patrols, in certain group/committees, paid dues on a certain date. \par *\tab Ability to mark badges as unawarded with the touch of a button (make grocery lists). \par *\tab Scoutmaster notepad and deluxe calendar with alarm \par \pard \qj\fi360\widctlpar Best of all, the cost is just $35 plus $4 s & h. For example, to get all of these "WEEK2" files e-mailed to you all you have to do is send an e-mail letter to LISTSERV@UA1VM.UA.EDU wi th the command GET WEEK2 PACKAGE F=MAIL in the body of your e-mail letter.
