From: hay@shannon.ee.wits.ac.za (Angus Hay) Subject: DISCO '93 - District International Scout Camping Competition Date: 6 Jun 93 17:12:30 GMT Announcing the first ever international Scout camping competition to take place on every continent simulateously. Not every Scout gets to go to an international (or even a national jamboree). JOTA, through amateur radio, gives many more Scouts the opportunity to participate across the world. However, to the best of our knowledge, nobody has ever tried to run a single camp in many parts of the world at once, linked by the Internet, FAX, phone or any of the other instant means of communication at our disposal today. Delta District of Johannesburg, South Africa, and Headington District of Oxfordshire, England, have joined forces to create DISCO, the District International Scout Camping Competition. DISCO is not meant to be a large event. Within each District, it is to be a single weekend's camping competition, at a local camp ground. Scouts will camp and compete as Patrols (preferably existing Patrols from each Troop). It will be open to all Patrols in each of the participating Districts. We are looking for a maximum of ONE other District from each continent to participate in DISCO '93. Although Troops within each District will compete on camping skills and standards - layout, construction, cooking, inspections, activities etc - the importance of DISCO lies in international participation. The aim is NOT to beat every other Troop in your District, at all costs, but to compete fairly, to have fun, and to be part of a worldwide camp. The programme, scoring and so on for each camp is to be the same. We intend to pass information such as scores, descriptions of activities, greetings etc between the various Districts, over the net, or via fax or similar, during the camp. Photographs, badges etc can be exchanged afterwards, via conventional (snail) mail. Each District involved is to provide: - a campsite - firewood - indemnity and insurance as usual - an organiser - an international liaison officer (who may be the organiser) who must have access to international electronic mail or, failing that, fax facilities - enough Leaders to provide 3 judges for each item; judges on each panel to be from 3 different Troops Further details, logos and badges will be forwarded to those Districts participating. There is still a lot to be done, and any assistance will be appreciated. DATES: 24-26 September 1993 VENUE: Your local camp ground Local time will be used at all campsites, for obvious reasons. Running a camp programme across various time zones will be half the fun (just as with JOTA).
