-------------------------------- From: ae110@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Frank Bates) Subject: Klondike Derby Date: 10 Jan 1993 06:20:59 GMT The following is from our Klondike leader guide. "There are strange things done in the midnight sun by the men who moll for gold..." from The Tale of Sam McGee" by Robert Service "FROM THE KLONDIKE CHAIRMAN: "The words of poet Robert Service certainly do apply to our annual Winter Event, as do the words, "Be Prepared". This year's Klondike will be a test of a Scout's ability to utilize what he's learned to survive the elements. The events listed here were designed to not only test, but to teach. This is baptism by fire (or ice) for some Scouts who have never camped in the cold, and what better way for them to learn than at the Klondike! "IMPORTANT TO NOTE: "* This is a winter campout -- be sure your boys are dressed appropriately for the season! Instruct them how to prepare themselves for the challenges of the cold. Take thewm through a practice run at packing their gear and include a checklist of necessary items. "* Low impact camping means leaving Camp Stigwandish without a trace of you being there. Be mindful of the Outdoor Code (page 55 of the 'Scout handbook'). "* No nuggets, Scout Bucks, or any kind of representation of points will be given to patrols after completion of an event. A checkpointed card will be handed out to each participating patrol Saturday morning. At the completion of an event, the event judge will sign the checkpoint card and enter the patrol's score on a seperate tally sheet held by the judges. At the end of the day, all judges will submit their tally sheets to the scorer's table for a comprehensive talley of all events. Patrols will be awarded one participation point for each event, even if no points were earned while attempting a skill. This system was established to eliminate point fraud and to build up excitement and anticipation for the awarding of prizes. More detailed information will be made available Saturday morning. "* We are hoping to provide prizes with practicality this year. The committee is now hunting for some great items that should be meaningful giveaways this for a job well done. "* Units must provide their own meals, so get the boys together to plan their menus - about three meals beginning with Saturday breakfast. There will be a Cracker Barrel Saturday night immediately following the Campfire and units have the option of attending the Sunday morning pancake and sausage breakfast for an additional $1.00 per person.
